Homi Jehangir Bhabha was a nuclear physicist, an architect, and a philanthropist. He was also the founding director and professor of physics at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).

Homi Bhabha Birth
Homi Jehangir Bhabha was born on 30 October 1909 in an aristocratic family to Jahangir Hormusji Bhabha and Meherbai Bhabha. His father was a renowned lawyer while his mother was a housewife. His brother's name was Jamshed Jehangir Bhabha.
Homi J. Bhabha's father Jahangir Bhabha was born and brought up in Bangalore. He went to England for higher studies and came back to India with a law degree.
He started practicing law under the Judicial Service of Mysore. Meanwhile, Jahangir Bhabha married Meherbai and they moved to Bombay. Homi and his brother Jamshed Bhabha were born and brought up in Bombay.
Homi's grandfather's name was Hormasji Bhabha and he was the Inspector General of Education in Mysore. Homi was named after his grandfather. Homi's aunt's name was Meherbai who was married to Dorab Tata. Dorab Tata was the eldest son of "Jamset ji Nasrwanji Tata", the founder of Tata Industries.

Homi Jehangir Bhabha passed the Senior Cambridge Examination at the age of sixteen. He went to Cambridge to earn a degree in mechanical engineering at Gonville and Caius College.
He then began research at the Cavendish Laboratories in Cambridge, and his first paper was published in 1933. Two years later, he earned his Ph.D. and lived in Cambridge until 1939.

The career of Homi Jehangir Bhabha
- When war broke out in Europe, Bhabha was in India and decided not to return to England for the time being.
- Two years later in 1942, Bhabha was elected as a member of the Royal Society and was later elected a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences. In 1943, he was appointed as the President of the Physics Section of the Indian Science Congress.
- He persuaded several senior Congress party leaders to launch an ambitious nuclear program. As part of his vision, he first established the Cosmic Ray Research Unit at the institute and later the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Bombay in 1945 with the financial help of JRD Tata.
- In 1948, he established the Atomic Energy Commission and served as its first chairman. In the same year, he was appointed by Jawaharlal Nehru as the director of the nuclear program and was tasked with developing nuclear weapons.
- From 1960 to 1963, he served as president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics.
- He contributed to the advancement of Compton scattering, the r-process, and nuclear physics. He gained international fame after he found a correct expression for the probability of positron scattering by electrons, a process now known as Bhabha scattering.
- Widely known as the father of the Indian nuclear program, Homi Jehangir Bhabha devised a strategy and focused on extracting power from India's vast thorium reserves rather than its uranium reserves. The principle proposed by him became India's three-stage nuclear power program.

Homi Jehangir Bhabha was also nominated for the Adams Prize from Cambridge University in 1942, the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 1954, and the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1951 and 1953–1956.
Homi Bhabha Death
Homi J. Bhabha died in a plane crash at Mont Blanc in 1966. He was on his way to attend the Scientific Advisory Committee meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, Austria.
It was in the news at the time that there was a misunderstanding between the pilot and Geneva airport officials about the status of the plane, and the plane eventually crashed after hitting a mountain. He died along with 117 passengers on board.
